House Clean-up

My grandfather, who is in his late 70s, was living on his own and in an unsafe environment. His age and health conditions restrict him from doing a lot of things for himself, and my mom and her sisters decided that he needed to live with one of them, or be moved into an assisted living facility. Since we lived the closest, just 20 minutes down the road, the decision was for him to live with us. However, our house was not big enough and his was not safe enough to live in. Therefore, my two brothers, mom, dad and I decided to clean and flip the house! This isn’t the average service job, but took many long days and long hours of work and was not easy, but helped to overall benefit my grandfather’s health and well-being. The house and whole experience reminded me of one that would be on the show Hoarders. Below, are the before pictures of the house. After over 5 months, the house will be done the first week of June, so my family and I are very excited. Over winter break, I was not doing any school and did not have a job at the time, so I had a lot of spare time on my hands, which means I could help out a lot. Some jobs I did included throwing away trash and waster, knocking down walls and floor and saving important stuff like furniture. Overall, we went through 4 dumpsters of trash and garbage, which is crazy! This experience taught me how important cleaning and health is. My grandpa’s health was at high risk and he needed to be in a safer environment, which I hope this clean-up provides. This experience also showed me patience and hard work. This clean-up process took a long time and was not easy. I spent hours upon hours in this house surrounded by dirt and filth, which was not the easiest at times, and I do not know a lot of people who would choose to do this or help. However, I pushed through and my family and I worked hard to get the job done. I am so excited for my grandfather and my family to move into our new house, we all deserve it! It will also be very interesting to see where the house started to where it is at the end of this process. Fun fact, this house was my mother’s childhood house, so she is very thrilled to see the transformation! Here are the before pictures of the house that shows all the work that had to be done to fully clear the house, and I will add the end results when the house is fully finished.
