Applied Statistics filled the Quantitative or Scientific Perspectives requirement. I took this course online, over Summer 2020, with Dr. Phillip Poplin. I had previously taken Statistical Decision Making, which is the course before Applied Statistics, during my senior year of High School. This class was my first non-semester course, so I was a little bit nervous. This level of nervousness continued throughout the course, as well. The layout of the course was asynchronous and gave me some trouble on keeping motivation and navigating the material and resources while I was taking it. I had never taken an asynchronous course before, and didn’t know how to control my time management, especially during summer, like how to stay on top of things. At the start of the course was the worst of it for me. I was constantly stressed out and felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I could not manage the lectures very well and retain the information I needed, and the assignments were very challenging. Once I had difficulty, I emailed my professor for tips on the course. We did a meeting over the phone, where he helped me navigate the canvas page and online resources. He gave me some tips that he has heard are useful from his previous students. From that moment, I began to see a change in the flow of the course. I started to understand and retain the information more, because I figured out where and how the online lectures worked. The assignments also began to come to be a little bit easier, but still were challenging at some points. I used my mom as a resource, since I was at home and she is a math teacher, and she helped navigate some of the struggles that I had. With all these resources, the course became more manageable for me. This course taught me that it is okay to reach out for help and can be very useful. Help in this case was essential for me to not only pass the course, but retain the information, and I am so thankful that I did it. Dr. Poplin was very approachable and useful, and I find that most to all teachers are. This class was my first and only B that I have received so far in my two years at Longwood. It was hard for me to receive this B, however, it taught me that a B is not “bad.” I may have not retained the information perfectly, but this B shows and reflects my hard work and dedication in the course, and I am proud of that because it was not easy! Below, I have attached a report that I completed during this course. It displays some of the work that I had to do, like coding, working with tables and graphs, finding averages and writing out analysis. It is a pretty in-depth report that shows my hard work and time commitment that I learned and gained from this course.
