HONS 495- Critical Looking

I took this course to help satisfy my open elective credits as well as my honors course requirements.

This course was art based and involved reading various texts in addition to creating our own pieces of art. The texts were centered around looking at life in a different way and the processes that go along with it. While some of the reading was challenging to understand, we would have discussions during class time to hear everyones opinions.

I enjoyed this course in its entirety, but two units really resonated with me. They were “Anything is a brush” and “Chance”. Sometimes we would use them in conjunction with one another or focus on each one separately. “Anything is a brush” was really fun. One assignment was to paint something without using a brush. We had to bring in various objects (that we didn’t mind getting paint on) to paint with. This was really fun for me and inspired me to try this when I paint my own canvases for fun. “Chance” was also a cool unit in this course. It was all about taking the decision making away from the artist and leaving everything up to chance.

Below is one assignment within the “Chance” unit. For this assignment, we had to use a I Ching response generator and match photos with the descriptions. The photos could be from our personal albums or ones we got off of the internet. How ever we chose the photos was also supposed to align with the principle of chance. Below are the phrases I received from the I Ching generator.

Overall, by taking this course I learned I have a passion for art. This is the second course I have taken with this professor and I always take courses with him whenever I get the chance. This one helped me think more critically about life and art. These are lessons that I will always remember and will help me in many ways.
