COMM 240- Digital Editing

This was the first course I took within Digital Media in Communication Studies. This helped satisfy my major elective requirements.

This course was really challenging to me at first. It was basically creating news segments in which each student works within a group to come up with a story, film it and then write your own script and edit the footage into a video independently. I also had to learn to use the software we would utilize in class because I had never been exposed to it before. This course taught me a lot about media production and what goes on behind the scenes, trust me it’s a lot more work than you would think. I also had to collaborate and work with my classmates in order to do each project, which was also a learning experience.

Overall, I learned a lot throughout this course. Not only about media production but I also learned a lot about myself. Before taking this course, I had never made videos in this way. I usually stick to writing so creating videos was a bit out of my comfort zone. However, I learned that I can still make videos, but in my own way, in order to tell a story. This course made me rethink how I work and inspired me to create different kinds of content. While this course was challenging, it reminded me that a story can be told in more than one way and that I should keep trying new things.

Above is one of the scripts I wrote for this course. As I previously mentioned, we would work in groups to come up with our story idea and to film it, but then writing our script and editing the video were done independently. This script outlines a video project I did and breaks it down into detail. It basically serves as a log for my video of what I’m saying and how long the video is. I also wrote out what each interviewee said in the video so everything was documented. We were to use vocabulary that is also stated in the media production world and this format is similar to what professional news reporters use.
