ENSC 350- Creatures of the Coast

I took this course to help fulfill my general education and/or Civitae curriculum requirements.

Coming from someone who typically doesn’t enjoy science classes, I really liked many aspects of this course. It was an environmental science class focused on coastal environments. During this course we discussed many different topics within coastal environments. For example, we talked about different types of coasts and their locations, several coastal countries and their demographics as well as many environmental laws. I found many of the topics interesting, much to my surprise.

Along with learning the content of this course, I also learned some things about myself. During my college career, I have learned it is important to specialize but also to challenge yourself by learning subjects outside of your major. I know I have mentioned this before, but this lesson really rang true in this course.

At the beginning of the semester, my professor wanted to get to know us (the students) so he asked us questions about our major, our year in college and so on. I told him I was a Communication Studies major and he always seemed to remember that. He told me there are a lot of jobs within environmental science involving Communication Studies. I will always remember him telling me that because I felt so surprised afterwords. It made me rethink my plans and ask myself if I wanted to have a career in an environmental science company or organization. I still haven’t decided because the future is unknown, but I will always remember his suggestion.

Taking this course made me realize there are a lot more opportunities than I ever thought within my major. It inspired me to keep my options open because I don’t know how much I will like something until I try it. Because of this course, I now have a greater interest in environmental science and might take more courses in the future.

Below is an outline of a speech I had to give in this course. The purpose of this speech was to persuade my audience on what I was saying and have them agree with me. In order to accomplish this, I had to write the speech differently than our first one which was an informative speech. I had already taken public speaking before beginning this course and the skills I learned there definitely helped me in this one.
