COMM 354- Public Relations Writing

Due to being a Communication Studies major with a concentration in Public Relations, there are certain public relations courses I am required to take. “Public Relations Writing” is one of those courses. I really enjoyed this course because it provided real practice within the realm of public relations. We practiced writing or learning about various public relations writing styles and techniques. This course reminded me of why I love Communication Studies. In many courses within my major, we do things a professional would do in a work setting.

In this course, we wrote news releases (a.k.a press releases), pitch letters and a fact sheet, to name a few assignments. Many times throughout this course my professor would say something like “When you are working in public relations approach clients like…” or “When communicating with the media say…”. I found this to be very helpful because it was post graduation advice. It is a good feeling knowing you are learning useful skills within your field.

I also gained more professionalism and persuasion skills due to this course. I was asked to write almost all of my assignments as if I was giving them to a real client. This caused me to think about how I would approach a real client and use appropriate wording and tone. Also, I used my persuasion skills because many times I was asked to persuade my “client” into doing something, like publishing my press release and so on. Overall, it was a great course because I gained real work skills.

The document above is a pitch letter I wrote for this course. The purpose of a pitch letter is to persuade the reader into doing something, usually publishing work. The purpose of my pitch letter was to explain why my story about a product would fit well within a publication. I never actually sent this document, but my professor had us research people within the publication and address someone, as if we were going to send it.
