COMM 105- Welcome to the COMMunity

This was one of my favorite courses I took during my freshman year at Longwood. Since I am a Communications Studies major, COMM 105 is one of the required classes I had to take. Even though this course was only 1 credit, it was still very beneficial to me.

This course was dual purposed to me. It served as an introduction into the Communications Studies major and all it entails, but it also was designed to help first year students outside of the major. During this course, the student was required to a lot of planning ahead. To further explain, one of the assignments I had to complete was a referred to as a  “Professional Progression”. It had two parts, the first part being, the student had to figure out a potential career they could go in in the Communications Studies field and the other part was making a resume tailored to that student, including the skills and education levels they hope to have achieved in the future.

The above image is my own resume created for this assignment. We were instructed to create it based off of where we see ourselves in the future, meaning the information in it isn’t valid to me right now.

Anyway, I found this course very helpful because many of the assignments made me think a head and really evaluate where I see myself in the future and what I need to do to get there. The course also helped the students with topics not related to Communications studies, like coming up with a 4-Year Course Scheduling Plan to better prepare one’s self for registration and for future registrations. Taking COMM 105 helped me understand my major more, but also helped me with important topics that beforehand, I was completely clueless on how to accomplish.
