ISCI 120- Entering Research 1

I gained a lot from taking Entering Research 1. Coming into Longwood, I was not a very good writer and struggled a lot with the overall structure of both essay and scientific writing. After taking this class, I have gained a very large amount 0f experience and education about writing in the biological sciences. I’m glad I have this experience and I’m sure that as a science major, this will help me greatly throughout my four years at Longwood University.

The assignment below was one of the first big writing assignments we completed in this class, an introduction to a scientific paper that we would be writing throughout the semester. At first, I felt very overwhelmed by the four page minimum requirement. I had never written a scientific paper, as my high school was very limited in its options for courses and I had never taken a class that would require me to write a scientific paper. After starting to write my introduction, I quickly realized that this was the type of writing that I actually enjoyed. I loved writing about something I was passionate about, the Chesapeake Bay. The semester in this class has gone fairly smoothly for me because of this, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to take this class at Longwood in the LIFE STEM program.
