MUSC 325- Music as An Agent of Change

This music class was focused on the LGBTQ community’s contributions to music and music affecting the community throughout history, beginning in the 1960s and ending in the late 1990s. I feel like LGBTQ history is often overlooked in the classroom, so I enjoyed getting to learn about music and history that I was not familiar with. For an assignment in this class, we had to choose a song that encompassed the theme of feminism and women’s rights, and then write a paper about the song. Analyzing song lyrics like this was new to me. Sometimes I have trouble understand what a song is really trying to say beneath the lyrics, so it took a lot of critical thinking and research. In the end, I was very pleased with my research abilities and I also learned how to write in a new format, including adding lyrics as quotes to my writing. Another thing that I struggled with in this assignment was thinking of new topics to write about. It ended up being a multiple page paper and it was hard to not be redundant. I learned how to think of the topic in different ways and connect other ideas to the song, which added length to it. My goal is to continue using this ability in the future.
