COMM 141- Introduction to Media Writing

Learning different writing techniques is very important when you’re a Communications Studies major. I have always enjoyed writing since I was in middle school but this course really helped me become a better and more informed writer.

Writing using media styles was quite different than any other writing I had done before hand. Before taking this course, I really was only used to writing academically and in a narrative format. This class showed me different ways I can write and tell stories. We also learned why some techniques are used in certain media outlets and how they are effective into those outlets.

Over the duration of this course, I learned many different styles of media writing. As one can assume, I wrote a couple of different papers using various techniques and styles. I not only enjoyed the challenge of having to learn to write differently but how we could write about whatever we wanted too. My professor would give us a very broad topic and we could write about anything within that topic. I mostly wrote about Longwood related topics and people. I wrote various stories about topics of concern within the Longwood community and how faculty and students felt about those issues.

This course was challenging for me because it can be hard to write in a certain format but I still enjoyed it. I believe this class really helped me become a better writer and more  equipped to accurately tell the stories of others.

The above paper was a feature story I wrote for this course. I wrote about a new program at Longwood called “My Life As A Freshman” while interviewing a current member as well as the creator of the program.
