Environmental Science • Leslie Straker • Spring 2018

This was my first class in an actual lecture hall, which certainly could have caused me to feel more like a number than an actual student. However, Dr. Straker was careful to learn each of his students’ names and offer assistance whenever needed. This class was almost entirely based on lab activities and powerpoints shown in lecture. Dr. Straker would often include a personal story or video that related to topics we discussed in order to keep the class’ focus. Attached is one of the labs we performed, this one based around the scientific method, an important component in all experiments. In this lab, we tested how quickly varying portions of Alka-Seltzer tablets would dissolve in water, and how different water temperatures affected dissolving rates. I enjoyed seeing how this lab played out, and felt that I could take this method with me into future labs.
