Goal 7: HIST 110
For HIST 110, otherwise known as Modern Western Civilization, I had Professor Melissa Kravetz. She is a highly esteemed professor at the college and made the class enjoyable, despite the heavy readings. I am typically very intrigued by history, and this class proved no different.
Our two textbooks for nightly readings were The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures, A Concise History, Volume 2: Since 1500 (5th edition) and Sources of the West: Readings in Western Civilization, Volume 2: From 1600 to Present (8th edition). Majority of our readings came from The Making of the West, our secondary source, while a few came from Sources of the West, our primary source for the class.
A few units we studied during the semester include:
- Overseas Exploration and the Building of Empires
- The Scientific Revolution
- Enlightenment
- The French Revolution
- The Industrial Era
- Imperialism
- The World Wars
- The Russian Revolution
- The Cold War
- Decolonization and Globalization
Our assessments included a weekly reading quiz based on the readings of the previous week. Each quiz was 10 questions long and out of 100 points. Students were also tasked with writing a Primary Document Analysis, which was 15% of our overall grade in the course.
For my Primary Document Analysis, I assessed Alexis Soyer’s Modern Housewife and Isabella Beeton’s Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management. Both texts came from Sources of the West. I have included a copy of the analysis below.
