HONS EDUC 487 – Classroom Management (Enhancement)

For one of my enhancements, I selected EDUC 487, also known as Classroom Management.

This course is arguably the most influential education course within the department at Longwood University. While probably 30% of a teacher’s time is spent actually instructing students, 100% of their time is dedicated to managing their classroom. This involves everything from lesson planning and execution to classroom setup, behavior management, grading, transitions, and more. It has everything to do with how a teacher treats their students and how they themselves are treated in return.

EDUC 487 gives students the tools they need to feel comfortable entering the classroom environment as an authority figure. It also adapts to the current, most effective methods of instruction. Therefore, I learned a lot about what does and does not work with students in the school system today.

Before taking this course, I probably would’ve gone into the field more apprehensively because I was worried about what happens when a student is disruptive, when a parent is unresponsive, or when faculty may not hold the same ideas that I do.

Now, after taking the course, I feel like I have the tools to not only survive the classroom environment but to thrive in a teaching position and to help my students thrive as well.

A group of honors students chose to enhance this course by making it a split section. While my major is English Literature, the rest of my peers involved in crafting this project are either Mathematics, Spanish, or Elementary Education majors. However, we all hold the common goal of revamping the classroom environment so that it’s student-centered, engaging, and inviting.

Below is our Spring Symposium presentation on how Peer Tutoring is an effective tactic with successful classroom management.
