Goal 11: PHED 101

PHED 101, or Fitness Concepts, is one of the Wellness requirements that fulfills Goal 11 of Longwood University’s General Education goals. It was probably the course that I was least looking forward to initially. This was because I not only cringed at gym in middle and high school, but because I’d heard that I would have to track my steps in order to achieve a certain quota each week and receive full marks.

While I know it’s important to stay healthy, I don’t necessarily agree with requiring students to hit the same quota in order to receive an A. Everyone has different body types, muscle capabilities, and so forth. Therefore, what I may deem easy could potentially produce injury or other difficulties in another student.

For example, I grew up dancing and one accidental fall years ago produced knee problems for me that are still present, but they’re not serious enough to prompt surgery. Thankfully, the professor for my section of this course was understanding of my difficulties and, while she couldn’t change my grade and I wouldn’t want her to, she was more gracious when I couldn’t hit full marks some weeks.

For this course, we went over a multitude of stretches and simple concepts within wellness and fitness. One thing I wish the course would’ve included is nutrition. I think this would’ve been beneficial because experts now know that a healthy lifestyle is a combination of exercise and diet. Especially for college students, our diet adjusts a lot when we go from home to a university environment. We may eat less often because of our busy schedules. The options for food may not taste great or, if they do, it may be because they’re less healthy. In fact, concerning Farmville specifically, most of the restaurants that surround campus are fast food. Having this additional information present in the course can directly impact the student body, especially if most of the students in this General Education course are just starting their college education.

In addition to tracking our steps each week, the various stretches and exercises we learned over the course of the semester impacted our final grade. The following artifact is my Practical Exam for the course. For this exam, I had to recall and complete several exercises and score myself based on what I could and could not correctly complete based off of training.
