HONS LSEM 100 – Longwood Seminar

The Honors LSEM class I took during the first semester of my freshman year was taught by Jenifer Cox, one of the Honors staff members on campus. Usually just LSEM, the Longwood Freshman Seminar course takes new students through a semester-long adventure of getting to know their campus, staff, and different facts about living and going to school on campus.

Throughout the course, which was held once a week as a 1-credit class, students were expected to write one journal entry per week. Each entry would have a different topic about our major, the school itself, classes we were taking, etc. These journal entries had to be at least one page in length to satisfy its credentials and were to be an in-depth, well-thought reflection of what type of student we were. The reflections were typically fairly easy and could be knocked out in around 20-30 minutes, which is how long each one took me once I wrote it out and edited it.

My favorite day in this course, by far, was the day the study abroad advisor came to speak to our class and answer any questions we had. She went through a slideshow that introduced what study abroad was and the general things to know about it, and the slideshow also had pictures that past students had sent her from their previous trips. It was awesome to actually see the pictures and dream up all the places we want to visit during our four years at Longwood.

The Honors College actually makes it a requirement to do at least one study abroad trip that’ll count toward our degrees come graduation. This was a welcome requirement for me because it helped convince my parents to let me go on a study abroad! This way, I’m closer to exploring Europe than I thought I’d be at my age!

In my opinion, the best paper that I wrote for the class was also the most enjoyable paper for me. In the middle of the semester, Ms. Cox gave us a “24 Hours” paper, meaning that we’d write about “24 Hours in Farmville.” At that time, it could be about any 24 hours in the last week and had to include at least a few sentences about each thing we did that day. I chose to write about the previous Saturday when Longwood held its annual Oktoberfest festivities. It’s attached below for your reading pleasure!
