Goal 12: PHIL 308

I decided to take the honors section of PHIL 308, simultaneously fulfilling one of my General Education goals in the process. I was excited about the course and theories that we would explore, but I was also nervous because I consider myself to be a very conservative person. Therefore, I was concerned that my views would be overlooked or unappreciated. However, while I could definitely tell which way the professor leaned, he remained respectful of my opinions and comments.

One of my favorite units that we discussed was Education, specifically moral and ethical claims and experiences within the field. I enjoyed the unit because I am an aspiring educator and I found that I was able to explore problems directly related to my future career. I will say, this course was one where I truly felt like my input was heard. I chose to write my second argumentative paper on this unit because it not only affects me but everyone in the classroom environment.

One thing this philosophy course taught me is that, even if you think your argument is faulty, it deserves to be explored because we can only make sense of society when we look into all aspects of it. My parents have always told me that I have a knack for asking the question, “Why?” The field of philosophy is constantly asking the same thing, so it was enlightening not only to see different perspectives but to explore that question deeper than I most likely would have otherwise.

In the following paper, I assert that our current educational system has become more about reaching testing goals instead of truly educating students to be better citizen leaders and learners. Because of this, the entire system needs to be reimagined and revamped to produce a better, longer-lasting model.
