Goal 8: SOCL 101
In SOCL 101, or Introduction to Sociology, I learned a lot about the dynamics between societies, families, friends, and peer groups. We learned about how major organizations or groups affect individuals on a daily basis and we explored the implications of what digital and social media mean for our society today.
While it was a General Education course, Sociology was definitely one of my favorite courses that I’ve taken at Longwood. I had Dr. Scott Grether, who was very inviting and invested in the course and the students. He was personable and also very helpful when it came to understanding content, working on assignments, or simply talking to us about whatever we were interested in. He made the class seem like one big scavenger hunt to find out what makes people groups function.
My favorite part of the course was our unit on socialization because we got to watch The Hunger Games and pick out how different characters and parts of society were influenced by outside forces. I’ve always been interested in people and their stories – what makes them tick, why they do or say certain things, and who they are in general. To have the opportunity to explore this concept in a new way, through one of my favorite literary series, was a treat!
I have included my weekly reflection for the socialization unit below!
