HONS MUSC 224 – Honors Music Appreciation
MUSC 224, or Music Appreciation, is one of the classes offered for the General Education goal of the arts at Longwood. It delves into the musical world, studying everything from classical music to contemporary artists we know today.
I was able to take the honors section of this course offered in the fall of 2018. My professor was Christopher Swanson, and it was wonderful to have the class with him because everyone could tell he genuinely loved the journey that music takes people on.
My favorite assignment from the course was my final research paper. We had to write about music, of course, but we were also given the task of connecting it to our individual content area – for me, it was English Literature.
This research paper allowed me to write about a movie score that is derived from my favorite classic novel of all time, Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of the novel was absolutely breathtaking in every way, but I loved getting to look at the music in particular.
Because of the time period, it’s all instrumental and mainly goes between piano and violins playing in the background. I love to play the soundtrack when I’m working on homework or reading because it’s just so relaxing and nostalgic to me!
I’ve included the PDF to my research paper below if you’re interested!
