Specialized Exercise Physiology
Specialized exercise physiology, taught by Dr. Morrison, is no longer a course required by my major. However, in the fall (2017) it was still required. This course had sections pertaining to how the body reacts in different environments while working out and how the body reacts to different substances, such as steroids, during and without exercise. For example, people who abuse the steroid testosterone, have decreased sperm mobility and decreased sperm count. This course helped me understand what substances do to the body so that I can help others understand why the drugs they are using are harmful. Many of the substances lead to death and most people are just not well informed about substances that are supposedly performance enhancing but actually detrimental.
The environmental conditions section was beneficial because it taught me how my body reacts to different conditions. For example, a common misconception is that running in the cold is bad for your lungs but that is not the case. Running in the cold is not detrimental at all.
I can apply the information learned in this course throughout my career and when approached by anyone questioning how exercise physiology works.
