As part of the Cormier Honors College I was able to study away at Yellowstone National Park in May of 2022. This immersion learning experience was an opportunity for me to critically analyze contentious issues within the park and surrounding areas. The opportunity allowed me to further develop my citizen leadership skills while also having the chance to travel with other students. This trip allowed me to build my communication skills, which I hope to utilize in the future as a nurse.
This immersion experience was 10 days. We traveled to Cody, Wyoming, Gardiner, Montana, and Jackson, Wyoming. Throughout each day we spoke with stakeholders, explored museums, explored nature, and spoke with local residents about a variety of contentious issues they may be facing in the Yellowstone Ecosystem, with my specific issue being fire management. Other activities included wildlife watching, Old Faithful explorations, hiking, and time spent with friends. During the immersion we kept a field notebook to gather and record an abundance of information that we would later reflect on in our reflection journal.
Throughout this course we read the book American Wolf by Nate Blakeslee. At the end of the course we wrote a chapter for a book that was related to our contentious issue, mine being fire management, which complemented Nate Blakeslee’s writing style. I have attached my book chapter below.
