COMM 380: Global Citizenship or Aesthetic Perspective

LGBTQ+ and the Media

This class focused on the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the media. Honestly, I was nervous at the beginning of this class because I am a Christian and my religion does not necessarily agree with aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. Furthermore, we were told we would be making a short film and I had previously never had experience with that. However, this class was really interesting because throughout the process of learning how to make a short film that represents this community without stereotypes and biases, I was able to learn and recognize the importance of representing this community even if I may not personally agree with their beliefs. This class gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone to learn and participate in things I would have previously never been interested in.

The largest project we did in this class was an LGBTQ+ short film. Although this had its difficulties, I think this was an amazing learning opportunity and allowed us to take our part in LGBTQ+ representation in the media. In creating this film, I recognized aspects of film making and representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the media that I need to further study and practice so I am able to be knowledgeable in the future when opportunities like this arise. However, I learned many techniques by having the opportunity to make a film and my knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community grew as a whole. I have attached the film, “A Family Call” below and I hope you enjoy it.
