SOCL 331: Aging and the Life Course

SOCL 331 was an online course focused on the comprehensive examination of social gerontology. Throughout this course I studied the historical changes in the role of elderly in our society, social and demographic trends, sociological theories, public policies, and social problems associated with the aging adult, such as poverty and loneliness. As a nurse I will be working with the aging population frequently. Therefore, this class was beneficial in allowing me to recognize the role that the elderly have in our population and the barriers they face in everyday life. Each week I was able to do different activity’s, read assigned chapters in the textbook, review provided online material, and take a test to apply my knowledge.

At the end of this course I was able to write a research paper on Alzheimer’s Disease, a disease affecting the older population. This paper allowed me to draw on the knowledge I had gained throughout the course and apply in to my research. In the future I hope to gain further knowledge on this disease and use that knowledge to help my patients who may be dealing with Alzheimer’s. I have attached the link below to my research paper.
