Externship on Labor and Delivery at St. Francis Medical Center

During the Summer of 2022 I had the opportunity to participate in an externship on the Labor and Delivery Unit at St. Francis Medical Center. My hopes have always been to work with children or on a labor and delivery unit after graduation. Therefore, I applied for this externship in hopes to gain further knowledge about this field of nursing and gain clarification that this is the field I really want to go into. After finishing this eight-week experience at St. Francis I realized that this is truly where my heart it. The happiness that comes with this field of nursing outweighs all the struggles I may face as a nurse each day. Although there are bad days, the joy of seeing life come into this world is inspiring. As an extern I not only got to see what labor and delivery all is about, but I also was able to practice many of the skills I have learned throughout nursing school. I am thankful to have had this opportunity and hope to utilize the knowledge I have gained in the future as a nurse.
