I spent the first 18 years of my life in a small tight knit community where everyone knew everyone. However, it wasn’t until I came to Longwood that I truly understood what community meant. After moving in at Longwood, there were an abundance of opportunities around campus for me to get involved in where I could see the true community of Longwood University working together.
The first week of my freshman year I participated in the Cormier Honors College retreat. Although it was difficult moving into college and being away from home, the individuals such as my mentor and the new friends I had made created a positive atmosphere that made this transition easier. I also joined BCM, the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, where I further saw the meaning of community and feeling welcome at my new home. The Student Nursing Association, SNA, was also a vital part of my college experience. I was able to participate in meetings, spread awareness on certain topics, and help with activities around campus.
In participating in all of these things I was able to form relationships that will last forever. The friends I made in Wheeler my first year, the honors retreat, and all the friendships that came from the organizations I participated in have emphasized to me the importance of community at Longwood. Although I am only a freshman this year, I have realized the true meaning of friendship and community and my love of Longwood University.
