Service

FRESHMAN YEAR

Community service has always been very near and dear to my heart ever since high school.  I loved giving back to the community I grew up in.  Now, through the Honors College, I have gotten that same opportunity in the Farmville community!  We spent some time on the honors retreat cleaning up the river that runs through town, and it was very fulfilling to be able to give back to the community that gives so much to us college students.  I hope to continue giving back to the Farmville community throughout my college experience through organizations such as FACES.  Helping people has always been a passion of mine and it warms my heart to be able to provide for those around me.  I hope to also find ways to engage in community service around campus such as Elwood’s cabinet and through different organizations’ fundraisers.

SENIOR YEAR

One of the main factors that drew me to Alpha Gamma Delta was their philanthropy mission: fighting hunger. Around the Farmville community, we volunteered with FACES to provide manual as well as donation support. Every Saturday at 7:00am, you can find at least 5 sisters at FACES through heat, snow, or rain. My favorite season for FACES shifts was during October because, every year, I would make sure I was able to hand out pumpkins to the lovely families of Farmville. It was always so wholesome to see the smiles on their faces (no pun intended!) and the smiles on ours when we knew they were going home with full hearts and grocery bags! Putting food on someone else’s table is always a privilege. We even enjoyed contributing to the campus community through Elwood’s Cabinet donations and tabling events. Another local philanthropy of ours that I hold close to my heart is Miles for Melissa and our pledge against drunk driving service week. I am very grateful that I was able to continue my passion in life of helping the people within my community.
