During this course I learned a great deal about the methods and histories of the different styles of handmade paper. Paper is a very common material used in everyday life and I had never considered the importance of this material before completing this course. I am thankful that I took this course, because it broadened my appreciation of the role paper has played in our history. The development of paper allowed historical civilizations to document their cultures, faiths, and history, which is an extremely important part of human development. I also never considered the process of creating handmade paper and I now understand the multiple steps that go into making paper. This may be a useful skill later in life if I ever want to spread this knowledge to others who know as little as I did before taking this course.
This artifact is the first stage of a project that I completed as my final exam for this class. For this project I was tasked with creating a body adornment—a wearable piece made using handmade papermaking techniques. The first stage was presenting my project proposal and the research I had completed that I used to contribute towards making my wearable piece. My project consisted of a Scottish kilt that I created from handmade paper and was designed with my family’s clan kilt pattern. I added the last slide to the presentation later to show the finished work.
