Sociology 320 – Sociology of Education

Sociology 320, Sociology of Education, is taught by Dr. Lee Bidwell. The course focuses on using sociological perspectives and empirical research to critically examine the historical, political, economic, social, and cultural factors that shape the structure of education in contemporary societies. The course was enhanced to fill an honors requirement.

The course assigned textbook was Education in America by Goyette. The class expectation was to read the assigned chapters in advance for and class discussions, quizzes, or tests. Responsibility was a beneficial factor with the set up of the course.

For the enhancement of the course, I did a research presentation for the class as well as Dr. Kukk (Cormier Honors College). The presentation focused on children out of school in sub-Saharan African countries Zambia and Malawi.

Meeting with Dr. Bidwell outside of class, she over saw the research I was completing and helped me create an outline. For the final class period of the course, I took over the class and presented my work.

This was very beneficial and led to many positive outcomes. I have now presented this research project at two conferences, the VSSA and Roanoke College.
