Perspective : Math 304 – Mathematics History

Math 304, Mathematics History, is taught by Dr. Sharon Emerson-Stonnell. The course concentrates on the hisory of mathematics spanning from early Egyptians through the 17th century. The study of mathematics in Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Chinese, Indian, Islamic, and European cultures will include number and number systems, algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, probability, statistics, discrete mathematics, and calculus. This course filled a perspective requirement under the quantitative or scientific component and was taken during the spring semester of 2021.

The course assigner textbook was The History of Mathematics: An Introduction 3rd ed. by Victor J. Katz. The book was used for homework assignments as well as a reference for projects.

At the conclusion of the course, I completed a final research presentation on a chosen mathematician. I completed the presentation on Hypatia. The content of the research needed to include a brief overview of the mathematics discovered by Hypatia and how it was used, what advancements the discovery made within the world, and lastly an ethical issue that arose from Hypatia’s life as a mathematician.
