Perspective : Modern Language 360 – French Fairy Tales

Modern Language 360, French Fairy Tales, is taught by Dr. Heather Edwards. This course examines a global issue as it is represented in different artistic works, such as literature, music, art, or film. The course emphasizes how this issue has developed in cross cultural contexts that span communities and historical periods. The issue examined for this course was the cross-cultural and timeless appeal of a Fairy Tale shared through history. The course filled a perspective requirement under the global citizenship or aesthetic component and was taken during the summer session II.

The course assigned textbooks were Mother Goose Refigured: A Critical Translation of Charles Perrault’s Fairy and The Classic Fairy Tales, 2nd ed. The books were used during class discussion. Outside of the scheduled lecture, reading was assigned of individual stories. This held students accountable so they were able to partake in class discussion.

At the conclusion of the course, I completed a final research paper in which I compared three works from the course where one of which had to come from a non-literary manifestation (film, theater, dance, art) of the tales. I also had to integrate three secondary sources to cover two of the chosen works. The focus of my final paper was on women behind the scenes: the perception of women in Fairy Tales.
