Communication Disorders in Society and Media

This course was about how society, mainly the media, portrays different communication disorders. The way we mainly looked into how these disorders were portrayed was through movies or short films. We would compare and contrast how the movie portrayed the disorder with what the disorder actually looks like when someone has it. An example movie that we watched was I am Sam, which was about a man who has an intellectual disability and raises a child, but people believe he isn’t fit to raise the child and so he goes to court to try and get her back into his custody. Sam, the father and main character, displays having an intellectual disability, which he does portray very accurately. There are some inconsistencies in the movie when looking at the disorder and the portrayal, but in general the disorder was portrayed very well and accurately.

The artifact from this class is a paper that was written that compares two different movies with their respective disorders. This paper was comparing I am Sam and King’s Speech to their disorders.
