Collaborate effectively in a group setting within the discipline.
- group papers (Orgo?)
- group presentations
- group research (parabens?)
Group work is imperative to experience and be a part of, as a science major. Often working in a group can help to eliminate stress, but also can help with research to divide up the work and make it go quicker. In the real life, group work will happen. It may not be often, but understanding how to work in a group will help in the future.
One of the earliest group projects that I had issues with was during the second semester of organic chemistry. This group project was hard because my partner had dropped, and another person dropped as well, causing me and another student to be thrown together as partners. We had to adapt to the new situation and ended up coming up with a research paper regarding parabens.
One of the most recent group projects I had done was for an immunology class where we had to diagnose a patient with a certain immune disorder. There were three of us in total for this project, and we worked effectively to make sure that the project was well done and had all the necessary information that the professor required of us. Throughout this project, we met outside of class to work on this presentation and even helped each other with the different portions that we had assigned to each other so that we all collaborated on the entire project.
I definitely grew throughout my time at Longwood with group projects, as I learned to be less of a bossy leader and more of a team leader. Before coming to college, I had always been the one to take over group projects and make sure they were done the way that I wanted, not really caring about others opinions. As soon as I got to college, I quickly realized that group projects needed to have everyone’s opinions to be the best that it could be.
In my future as a doctor, there won’t be too many instances where I need to work in a group to get something done. One instance may be if I am writing a research paper with other doctors, or I am working with another doctor to determine what is happening with a patient. In these situations, the skills that I have learned from Longwood will help me to perform to my best ability both individually and in a group.
