Sociology 105: Sociology in Practice

I loved this class! It was a very fun one with Dr. Grether. The course was essentially a blanket introductory one, obviously, as it was a 100-level class. It dived into different topics regarding America’s current state of social institutions, condition and such. Topics like prison, school, family, military among many others were heavily discussed. I think my favorite takeaway from the course is the concept of how essentially everything (institutions, work, school, etc…) is a made-up societal concept, and we all just play by those rules.

Link The piece that I linked here was a reflection on a super fun in-class game, called “Classopoly.” It was a simulated game of monopoly where each player was assigned a “class”at the beginning, and had to play out the games with either preconceived advantages or disadvantages. It was a very eye opening experience in terms of the difference of equality and equity.
