Goal 11- Physical Activity

As a person who is very unathletic and generally inactive to a likely unhealthy extent, I was surprised to find some aspects of this course to be enjoyable.  The way that it was designed allowed for people to learn to exercise safely and effectively at their own level of capability, which was unique among the physical education class I have taken.  This allowed me to use my time in the gym in a way that was beneficial to me and that gave me my first taste of actually going to a gym and working out, and I found that it felt good.  This was definitely a very small first taste, and I can’t say that it inspired me to go to Longwood’s fitness center regularly to exercise, but I have not forgotten the satisfaction of knowing I had done something good for my body.  One other lesson that I will take with me came from a documentary we watched about the health benefits of various kinds of exercise.  Several sources in the film stressed the importance of being active in small ways throughout daily life, a skill that we were forced to build during the class by tracking our weekly number of steps.  Because of the film and training from the step requirement, I am now consciously trying to be active in small, manageable ways, such as going for walks as a break from studying.
