Citizen 110

Societal Issues in Film

Throughout this particular Citizen 110 course taken with professor Thomas Nez, we discussed various cinematic aspects of films and the mirroring of societal flaws within them.  Films such as American HoneyHer, and Taxi Driver were among the films that were analyzed throughout the course.  We focused on cinematic elements such as light, sound, and character development in order to analyze the society in which the film was meant to reflect.

The photo attached is one that I took in October, 2019 while visiting the Virginia Film Festival in Charlottesville with Professor Nez and a few of my fellow students.  We were able to attend a screening of a locally produced film and discuss our thoughts on the cinematic elements used to portray the development of the plot.

This class is one that I will remember forever.  I have always been a quiet person, someone that never spoke up much in classes as I was far too nervous of saying the wrong things.  The presentation based structure of the course along with Professor Nez’s constant support and reassurance pushed me to be more confident with myself in the classroom.  This class gave me a much more in depth understanding and appreciation for films and the process that goes into analyzing the social issues presented in them.
