Social innovation was an amazing course where I created a social innovation, which are new social practices that aim to meet social needs in a better way than the existing solutions. Not only did I get to be creative with the innovation that I created, but I also got to work with two students from the Netherlands.
The topic for our project, which we worked on for most of the semester was healthcare. We wanted to create an innovation involving scrub tops. I came up with the idea to have the scrub tops patterned in the fabrics form underprivileged countries and when the scrubs were purchase, a portion of the proceeds would go to funding medical supplies form those countries.
The class was somewhat challenging because of the time difference between the US and the Netherlands. I had to stay up really late some nights to work on my assignments so that they could help as well. Overall, I think that the course helped to improved my presentation skills as we had to learn how to present without not cards and I got to learn about different aspects of Dutch Culture as well. My favorite part of the course was finally pulling our idea together and getting to come up with “designs” for the scrubs.
