SHAV Conference

As a second year graduate student, and with graduation quickly approaching, I found the SHAV conference very rewarding and beneficial for my future career as a speech-language pathologist. Attending this conference allowed me to connect with potential employers as well as network with current SLPs. I also attended numerous engaging and informative presentations by professionals in the field regarding specific assessments and intervention techniques related to particular disorders and populations. I am excited about the additional knowledge that I gained pertaining to speech and language therapy and cannot wait to apply what I have learned to my current externship experience and future patients. Thanks, Longwood for this wonderful opportunity two years in a row.

SHAV Conference, 2015

SHAV 2015This weekend, I was fortunate to attend the 2015 Speech Hearing Association of Virginia conference in Richmond. I talked to many venders and sat in some of the sessions. During one of the most informative sessions I attended, I learned about using structured teaching to build communication in students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It was wonderful to talk to and learn from so many different people who are passionate about such a rewarding field. I look forward to using all of the new information I learned this weekend with my future clients.

2015 SHAV Conference

IMG_6069This year I had the privilege of attending the 2015 Speech-Language Hearing Association of Virginia’s annual conference. The conference was held in Richmond, VA at the Double Tree by Hilton. I was in attendance on Thursday March 26th from 8:00am to 4:30pm and was able to sit in on 4 different seminar sessions.

Each of the sessions were very informative and full of new information to learn. I chose to attend a session on Augmentative and Alternative Communication, The Use of Interpreters, Infant Feeding, and Autism. I enjoyed each session, but especially the last one on Autism. The presenter was very knowledgeable and gave us several real-life scenarios in which we could use the techniques she was discussing.

They also had a separate room in the hotel with numerous vendors from all over the state. A handful of them were selling products and the others were advertising for their respective businesses. I think this is a great feature for students who will be seeking employment in just a few years. Although I will not be graduating until May of 2017, I am glad to have already had this type of experience. I look forward to returning to SHAV next year and for many years to come!

ASHA Convention

20141122_11574720141122_122354  I had the pleasure of attending the annual convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Orlando, Florida this fall. I was unsure of exactly what to expect from the convention, but it exceeded any expectations by far. I was able to attend copious oral seminars and technical reports by the most prominent speech-language pathologists in the field. I was able to attend a session on pediatric feeding and swallowing by a woman who is considered to be the expert in that field. That particular session cemented and expanded upon the informationa gained in my graduate coursework in feeding and swallowing disorders here at Longwood. I attended many other sessions some of which pertained to craniofacial anomalies, childhood apraxia of speech, autism, and stuttering disorders. All of the aformentioned sessions enhanced my knowledge of those disorders and better prepared me to work with those populations in my future career.

As a person who is from and will return to the Orlando, Florida area, this opportunity was especially beneficial because I was able to network with many employers. An extensive number of employers from the area held tables within the exhibit hall. I was able to discuss future employment opportunities and preferred applicant qualities with many of them. As I am graduating in May 2015 and have begun thinking of my career following graduation, I have become interested in pursuing a PhD program. A session was held at the convention in which several PhD graduates discussed the application process and requirements for students interested in doctoral programs, which was very helpful. I was honored to be one of the two students representing Longwood at the ASHA Convention and I am eternally grateful for the rewarding experience.

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 3rd Annual Pediatric Feeding Conference at CHOR.  It was encouraging to see such a variety of interdisciplinary professionals, OTs, PTs, SLPs, collaborating for the benefit of the pediatric population.  I learned about the vital role that pediatric dieticians play in planning a child’s dietary routine.  I look forward to incorporating the new information I learned at the conference into my clinical experience.

I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend the 3rd Annual Children’s Hospital of Richmond Feeding Conference. Attending this conference has enhanced my education in the area of feeding and swallowing intervention for the pediatric population. Most importantly the content of this conference provided me with critical information in regards to treating children who experience food aversions which affects their nutritional well being and quality of life. The information obtained from this conference will be vital for future diagnostic and treatment implementation as I become a professional in the field of speech-language pathology.
