Service

To me, service stands for being able to give back to Longwood University and the Farmville community.  Longwood has given me so many unique opportunities and experiences, and I want to be able to give back for what they have done for me.  The Farmville community is also filled with plenty of different ways to provide service to the community.  They are always in need of individuals who can help out in the community and make a huge impact on other people’s lives.  Here is a list of the community service I have completed throughout my time as a student at Longwood University:

  1. Honors Leadership Retreat Service: On August 16th, a group of us honors students during our leadership retreat went over to the High Bridge Trail.  While we were there we cut back any of the branches off of trees that were hanging in the middle of the trail.  Also, if there were any sticks or big rocks on the path we had to move them to the side.  Since lots of bikers ride on the trail, our job was to make it a more safe environment so that people can enjoy the trail without having branches in their way.
  2. Lancer for a Day: Fourth grade students all around Prince Edward county came to Longwood University on April 5th to become lancers for a day.  My job was to be a tour guide from the education building, Hull, to the science building, Chichester.  After we took one of the fourth grade classes on a mini tour across campus, another tour guide and I stayed at the classroom we led them to.  They were to have a mock physics class with our physics teacher, so we stayed around to help with demonstrations for the young students.
