SOCL 320

This was an honors class that was taken the first semester of my sophomore year.  I really enjoyed this class because it was interesting to learn how sociology ties in directly to education for all ages.  We were able to learn about the different biases of race and how it affects the achievement gap in schools, disability laws and policies that are implemented in schools, how extracurricular activities affect achievement of students, and even the roots of school violence with the plans in place to help prevent it.  There was such a wide range of topics that we were able to learn about, but each was very significant as we will need to have knowledge of how the policies work within the school systems we will be working in.  While it was not a very challenging class for me, it definitely put me outside of my comfort zone when talking about some of the difficult but very important topics we covered in the class.  However, I thought the way the professor taught the class was great and I learned so much from it that I can apply to my career in the future.

Title: Final Exam – Creating A School

Authors: Katelyn Weber and Anna Sotelo

Date: December 12, 2019

The artifact for this class was our Final Exam: Creating A School paper that we created at the end of the semester.  We were assigned to answer 16 questions regarding to how our school would be set up such as where money was coming from to support the school, school violence prevention measures, how we would ensure equal opportunities to students, and even what the structure of our school would look like.  It was very interesting and fun being able to complete this as it really made you think about all of the components that go into making a school function and work properly.  It also made us draw on everything we had learned throughout the semester while adding in fun touches like being able to come up with a creative name for our school.
