CITZ 110

Citizen 110 was one of the first honors classes I took at Longwood.  Coming to college, I was a shy, reserved individual who was a little worried about what classes at college would be like.  However, my teacher, Dr. Dudley-Shotwell, was amazing and truly made me feel like I had what it takes to do well in not only her class but my other classes as well.  Every day we would have lectures and group discussions where we were required to participate in so that we could get participation points.  This was very overwhelming at first because I have always been the shy person who listens and doesn’t always participate.  By the end of the class though I had become a more outgoing person who participated a lot every single day.  My teacher looked out for me by made sure I felt comfortable, especially when it came to our two formal presentations, and now I have gotten to be a much better public speaker and presenter.

The artifact I chose was our final project in the class.  We had to create our own syllabus for a “class” we would teach along with doing a presentation to explain it.  This required us to do lots of outside research in order to find our sources for each topic in the syllabus, but it helped us understand our topic much better.  My topic had to do with education and how it was different for minority groups, so this project was extremely helpful as it allowed for me to understand some of the challenges I will be faced with in the future as an elementary school teacher.
