ENGL 382

This Honors class for English 382 was taken the first semester of my junior year. When signing up to take this class, I was a little nervous because throughout grade school I was never great at grammar and my teachers never touched on the topic much during my classes. However, at the same time I was really excited because I had Dr. Ruday as my professor and I had heard amazing things about his class. I absolutely loved this grammar theory class because I learned so much useful and practical content that I will be able to take with me into the future. One goal I set for myself in this class was to make sure I constantly reviewed the material as we learned it so I could retain the grammar concepts well. I feel like I did a good job with this as I went through a lot of sentences to practice the skills, and Dr. Ruday made it really easy to achieve this because we didn’t just practice the material each class on current topics, but past ones we had covered as well. I was also proud of myself because this was another class where I practiced volunteering to answer questions in order to get over the fear of getting the answer wrong. Overall, this class was so beneficial since I will be teaching these grammar concepts to my students in the future, and it definitely helped me prepare for my Reading and Language Arts Praxis II certification test that I just passed!

Title: Grammar Meme

Author: Katelyn Weber

Date: November 23, 2021

The artifact for this class was our Grammar Meme that we each had to create. The directions for the assignment was to choose one of the grammar topics we had learned about in our class and then create a meme about it to showcase our understanding of not only just the concept and how it is formally used, but how it is used in social settings as well. Once we created our Grammar Meme, we each took turns presenting it in class and I liked how Dr. Ruday had us comment on the other ones explaining the reasoning why it was put together well or why we really enjoyed it. I loved this assignment because it was a very different and unique way of capturing student knowledge which I can definitely take with me into my own classroom in the future!
