This split honors section for KINS 389 took place during the second semester of my sophomore year. In this class, our project for the split section consisted of studying a disability that our group chose and then writing a paper on the benefits of those students participating in recess. The disability that our group chose to focus on was General Anxiety Disorder or also known as GAD. Within our paper, we were instructed to give an introduction, give general information on the disability such as the signs and symptoms, and provide an explanation of the benefits of the recess setting for students with the mental illness. This was very interesting to learn more about as I will most likely be around students who might have this mental illness or other similar ones, and now I will have a better understanding of what they go through and the ways I can best benefit them. It also brought in a lot of the information we had learned within the class throughout the semester. We had one topic that really focused on the benefits of recess as it is an unstructured free play time that students are able to be active. Being able to take everything we had learned about the multiple positives to recess time for students and tying it together with how it specifically helps students with GAD was a great learning experience. It showed me how what we learn in class can be put into place in real life situation to help those students who are more disadvantaged than others.
