Popular Music & Culture
I took this course during the Fall 2021 semester with Dr. Schattenkirk. Going into this course I was decently excited, as I love music and all cultures, though I was concerned as I have no really music knowledge. This class taught me how to really interpret and read into the words in popular music and seek out the truth and purpose of the song. Doing this required skills I had previously never used, such as: interpretive skills, music composition analysis, and historical analysis of music. Throughout this class, I grew as a better student and lover of music and am very glad I took the course. The artifact linked below is my final paper for the class, where I use the skills developed over the semester to research and analysis music and its connection to mental health. This assignment was challenging for me and allowed me to grow as better and more diverse writer.

The above artifact is the final research paper of this course. It is titled “Mental Health in Music” and was written by myself, Tucker Marshall, on December 6, 2021. This assignment was chosen, as it was the culmination of skills I was introduced to and developed throughout this course. Furthermore, it was bridging the gap between my field and realm of comfort, science and scientific writing, with the field of music.
