Sociology 105

Sociology in Practice

I took sociology 105 in the Spring of 2020 with Dr. Pederson. I had no expectations going into this class, so I’d say it went pretty well. I truly loved a lot of the material in the class, especially how we would relate it to things we directly deal with or experience. We were also required to do some community service for this class, which I absolutely loved. Community service has been a big part of my life, but since going to Longwood I hadn’t really done much of it. This assignment forced me to get out there and go volunteer again, and I am so grateful for that. I started volunteering at White Bird, and appaloosa rescue in the area. Unfortunately, I am unable to share any photos of the facility in order to keep the staff and horses safe. So instead, I will be sharing my research paper from the class. This class not only allowed me to get back into volunteering, but also allowed me to develop my research skills. In all honesty, I hadn’t done many peer reviewed research studies before this class, and was rather ill prepared for it. Luckily, Dr. Pederson had us learn how to research correctly in steps and laid out a chart for us to fill out. This was extremely helpful, and I’ve now used this chart in other class as well. For our final, we had to research a sociological topic that directly related to ourselves. I decided to research how social media usage affects undergraduate college student success. The process of finding scholarly journal articles and finding useful and accurate information was quite a learning curve. My research paper was by far the hardest and most rewarding assignment from this class. It allowed me to actually learn about the research process and today’s society. It is my most most valuable assignment from sociology 105 because of the skills it made me attain and improve upon, but also because it is a paper I am most proud of.

The artifact above is my final research paper from sociology 105, and is titled “Solving Problems Through Research.” It was written by myself, Tucker Marshall, and is dated April 17, 2020. This assignment is meaningful to me, as it required me to learn many skills I had not ever used before, and it was the most rewarding assignment from the course.
