LGBTQ+ and the Media
I took Communications 380 in the Spring 2021 semester with Dr. Waggoner. Before even starting this course, I was excited for it. I have a special interest in this topic, but was far more uninformed than I thought. We only met once a week, but we participated in large class discussions which helped me develop my critical thinking skills and learn the importance of an open mind. This class introduced me to events in history I was previously unaware of and current day media spaces and places that are for or pertain to the LGBTQ+. I grew a lot in this class, especially in my ability to effectively communicate with others and become more comfortable voicing my own thoughts in group settings. The artifact I have chosen from this class is a film I, and my fellow group members, directed and edited. This was the final project of the course and it was even entered into a film contest at Longwood. In working on this project, I gained many new skills, such as: directing, green screen, video editing, audio editing, and various camera operations. This experience gave me a new appreciation for those who work in the film industry and an overall better understanding of the media and what goes into it.
The artifact above is a short film titled “Caught Red Handed.” It was created by Jaime, Tyler, Sophia, Monea, and myself, Tucker Marshall, on April 27, 2021. This assignment was chosen as it was the most impactful assignment for me, as it required me to learn many new skills. Additionally, I think this video is simply hilarious.
