What Service Means to Me
Service has been a big part of my life ever since I was a little kid. It started off small, with cleaning up parks, preparing meals for those in need, and simply giving free car washes. Then, in middle school, I began serving my community weekly. I helped run a historical movie theatre in downtown Blacksburg while continuing many of my previous acts of service. I continued with this until I left for college, and on breaks, I continue volunteering with them. By doing all of this I learned how important service is. Serving others keeps a community together. It strengthens the bonds between those who, perhaps, have nothing in common other than where they live. It shows others that people care, even if you have never met before. Serving others instills humanity in all that are involved, and that is so important in the crazy world that we live in. No matter what’s happening in the world, people should be there for other people. If we don’t stick together, then what’s the point?
These are some photos of me serving others throughout the years.
Service in the Honors College
The Cormier honors college has helped me to maintain serving others. I loved going on the Honors Service Retreat with other honors students and helping out a community I had never encountered before. I’m looking forward to doing it again next year, and the year after that. Service is a big deal for me and the Honors College, which is one of the many reasons I decided to join them. Being amongst other students who also value service is important to me. Through a love for others and giving back to a community I have met some of the greatest people, and I am immensely thankful for that.
