Psychology 498 and 499 were the two parts of my honors senior thesis. The semester prior to 498 I had to find an advisor, create a thesis committee, and create an idea to pitch to Longwood for my thesis. I successfully pitched my thesis proposal on aphantasia’s link to visual memory retention and began work the following semester in the 498 class. The main goal of 498 was to start data collection as soon as possible and later in the semester start outlining the final thesis sections to make the future parts easier. The main two parts to starting data collection were creating the website to host my survey and creating the survey itself. From my research the previous semester I found that I’d need to create a website from scratch so I enlisted the help of an experienced programmer to help me with this endeavor. As for the survey itself, I used past research on survey parts to form mine the best I could before running it by my advisor and tweaking it slightly. The point of 499 was to finish up the thesis which meant I needed to finish data collection, analyze the data, write the final thesis paper, and defend my thesis. This of course sounds like not too much work, only 4 main points, but was certainly one of the most nerve-racking things I have done, and took a very long time to have the thesis at a point I deemed worthy of a defense. The whole process took countless revisions, re-writes, and edits with many parts, and at times the whole section or paper was thrown out to try again.
The artifact will be my successfully defended thesis hosted on Longwood’s senior thesis page. Currently, it has not been posted as the library has not been working on this during the break but will be up soon.
