Environmental Science 333, Natural Hazards & Disasters, satisfied my Quantitative/Scientific perspective slot, although I don’t know why any of my various science classes throughout my major or minor didn’t count, like Behavioral Neuroscience (PSYC 321). This, despite my gripes about the system, was a fun and interesting class including various weather patterns which is something I have been interested in since I was a kid. We went through various disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, landslides, blizzards, etc. For each, we went through how they happened, what to do at each stage of the hazard/disaster, how they might be prevented, and the fallout. I enjoyed the class discussions that took place daily about the various events we were talking about or the systems in place to help with these events and affected areas. We also had a few guest speakers that helped to talk about specific parts of the class like the FEMA speaker who was able to talk about specifics about how the government sends assistance to various areas before, during (if possible), and after disasters.
Below you will find my preparedness plan reflection (after going over our various plans in class) and I specifically talk about my family’s hurricane plan and what was lacking.
