This introduction to philosophy course satisfied my human behavior and social institutions pillar. With this being an entirely online and asynchronous class I had to adapt to a different learning style. I’m used to more structured times for class, assignment due dates rather than ranges, and in-class discussions. This was not my only asynchronous class, nor my only during this semester, but it was one of the most difficult I’ve taken because of it’s structure. Most of the other classes with a similar format changed to have either more readings/information links within the course page and assignments to keep you on track. Some of the others will have video lectures, required meetings with the professor, or other ways to ensure that you, are at least somewhat, understanding the material. This alone was not an issue for me, and I’d actually prefer this in some classes, however with this being a philosophy class I found that we really needed more discussions and just how much of an effect not having these in-person affected the class. While in another class of mine, adolescent and adult development, we only had lectures and four grades I still felt like I had the material to look at and understand; this class felt like I was missing something throughout. Although all the way through the class I felt like I wasn’t understanding everything perfectly, I did do well and enjoyed the material we went over except for a few terms having clashing terms with my psychology classes. Overall, I think the class itself had interesting topics and ideas but was presented in an unfortunate way because of the situation the school was in, due to COVID-19, and I’d like to maybe take a future class in-person to see if my theory is correct!
This was our final part of test two. I found the rules to be very confusing and without any examples to look to for formatting I struggled to find something that looked correct to me. I ended up with this three section split, with each main part outlined getting it’s own section, which earned me an A finishing the class off strong.
