The first assessment I received a 40 and that translates to being in the outgroup. The few bosses that I have had were not the greatest leaders and nor was I comfortable talking to them about things. I should have used my professors as I feel I would be in the “ingroup” as I have a wonderful relationship with all my professors. Although, the results do reflect me well. I am a hardworking and antisocial worker as majority of bosses and coworkers have been very inappropriate in the past. In the social work field, it is a different atmosphere within a helping process rather than retail or fast food.
The second assessment I received a 43 which translates to being effective follower. I did not think I was a good follower but it seems I fit it well. I think this will definitely help within the social work profession as I need to know how to be an effective follower to be an effective leader. This gives me the ability to follow the client’s growth in their own empowerment than taking the lead on it.
It is equally important to demonstrate both strong leadership and followship skills. This is due to the many roles as a social worker. Sometimes, in order to help someone, a social worker needs to lead but this also means that sometimes social workers need to follow. In child abuse cases, a social worker needs to lead the charge into making sure the child I safe. With adults, social workers need to give the person the tools to help themselves and then effective follow them while suppling them needed information.
In my opinion, I think it is hard for a leader to maintain personal friendships with some of their members and not others. This does create a perception of the in-groups. I think it is because those within the in-group is more than likely will get the promotion or the raise. I personally would want to keep my work and personal life separate with those that are under me. I think it does not live up to the NASW Code of Ethics as it does represent integrity nor dignity and worth of a person.
I think someone can have a successful career by aspiring to be an effective follower. In order to be have a successful business, to be a successful leader, there has to be effective following. Some people do not aspire to be the one in charge but to be a part of the team. I feel, if someone is a hard-worker and good at receiving instructions, then why could they not have a successful career?
