Citizen 110

At the beginning of this year I had no idea what to expect from this course. How would citizenship be taught through The Hunger Games trilogy? However, as the course took off, I saw the series that I once read in a single weekend as a 13 year old in an entirely different light. I reflected on every chapter and asked key questions, and through that, gained information surrounding citizenship. This class pushed me to my limits, especially with public speaking. I had never given a speech before this class, so I learned how to research for sources to support my main ideas and probably recorded each speech over 20 times in an effort to make it perfect.

The highlight of this course was when I presented in front of my entire class. It was one of the most terrifying things I have ever done and I remember my papers getting out of order and messing up a few times, but at the end, I gave a successful speech and felt a strong sense of accomplishment, especially because I hadn’t cried in front of my class. There was a lot of reading and research in this class, but at the end of the day I gained experience in public speaking which will serve me well here at Longwood.
